The iconic Tivoli Amusements arcade in Herne Bay, a once-popular seaside attraction, is slated for demolition as part of a major redevelopment initiative by Canterbury City Council.
The council purchased the arcade, located on Central Parade, for £1.1 million in 2018, but despite attempts to sell the property, it has remained vacant and deteriorating.
During a council meeting held on 24 October, Chris Cornell, the cabinet member for economic development, confirmed that the demolition is scheduled to begin in spring 2025.
He revealed that the first phase of demolition was completed during the summer, leaving only the adjoining residential property and the arcade’s historic façade intact.
Cornell emphasized, “The second phase of physical works will also include the demolition of the former Tivoli Arcade.”
Following the demolition, the council is exploring several options for the site, including potential sales or partnerships for redevelopment.
Previously, planning permission was granted to convert the land behind the arcade into three retail units and 31 residential homes, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
This redevelopment is expected to breathe new life into Herne Bay, enhancing the area’s appeal to both residents and tourists.
The impending demolition of the Tivoli Amusements arcade signifies a pivotal move toward revitalizing Herne Bay’s seaside landscape and stimulating economic growth in the region.
As the community prepares for this transformation, stakeholders remain optimistic about the future development opportunities this project may bring.
