King Charles was officially welcomed as the “High Chief” of Samoa during a vibrant ceremony in Moata’a Village, where he engaged with local customs and traditions.
Dressed in a striking red ceremonial garment alongside Queen Camilla, the royal couple embraced the cultural experience surrounded by tattooed Samoans in traditional attire.
During the ceremony, King Charles was presented with kava, a narcotic root drink significant to Pacific culture, served in a half coconut.
The King consumed the beverage in moderation, taking care after previous incidents, including an event in Micronesia where Australia’s former deputy prime minister required hospitalisation due to excessive consumption of the drink.
This visit coincides with Sir Keir Starmer’s arrival in Samoa for Commonwealth discussions, where the topic of slavery reparations is expected to arise.
Commonwealth leaders are anticipated to reach a consensus on addressing reparations through a formal communique, although Downing Street has indicated that the specific topic will not be on the agenda.
Sir Keir has encouraged leaders to focus on forward-thinking solutions during their discussions.
