Manchester City has appointed former Swedish international Therese Sjögran as the new director of football for its women’s team. The 47-year-old football icon, who succeeds Nils Nielsen following his departure in June, will oversee recruitment and development across the women’s and girls’ teams. Sjögran will officially join on December 1, reporting to City’s managing director, Charlotte O’Neill.
Sjögran, a seasoned sports leader, previously served as the sporting director at Rosengård after retiring as a player in 2015. She brings vast experience to City, having earned 214 caps for Sweden and led the team to the 2003 Women’s World Cup final and the 2001 European Championship final.
“Therese is a legendary figure in women’s football with a profound impact both on and off the field,” O’Neill said on Manchester City’s website. “With her expertise, she’s a perfect addition to our team striving for top achievements.”
Sjögran’s arrival comes as Manchester City leads the Women’s Super League, one point ahead of Chelsea, with Gareth Taylor’s squad also excelling in their debut group-stage campaign in the Women’s Champions League, recently defeating defending champions Barcelona.
