The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has announced its commitment to driving job creation in the space sector through substantial investments in key programmes, as highlighted by Maria Eagle, the Minister of State for Defence.
In response to a parliamentary inquiry from James Cartlidge, the MP for South Suffolk, Eagle elaborated on the government’s strategy to enhance employment in the rapidly expanding space industry.
Eagle pointed to significant MOD initiatives, including the £5 billion SKYNET secure global satellite communications programme, which are pivotal in creating jobs.
She stated, “The Ministry of Defence (MOD) supports the creation of new jobs in the space sector through major spending on projects such as the SKYNET secure global satellite communications programme, worth £5 billion over ten years, and the ISTARI programme which develops a range of world-leading technology.”
These programmes are not only crucial for the UK’s national security but also offer substantial opportunities for businesses to grow and recruit talent in a competitive global market.
For instance, Eagle cited Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, noting that MOD contracts have “directly supported around 100 jobs, with many more indirectly.”
Moreover, these space initiatives are crafted to encourage industrial sponsorships, educational schemes, and skills development, fostering new talent within the sector.
Eagle added, “Programmes like SKYNET include requirements for industrial sponsorships, educational schemes and skills development to bring new talent into the industry.”
This investment strategy signals the UK government’s dedication to enhancing its space capabilities while simultaneously bolstering the economy through job creation and talent development in this vital industry.
