The Environment Agency has issued eleven flood warnings across West Yorkshire, as Storm Bert brings heavy rainfall and melting snow, causing rising river levels throughout the region.
The flood alerts are in effect along the River Calder, stretching from Hebden Bridge to Todmorden, where flood sirens have been activated. Additional warnings are in place for areas including Walsden and Midgelden Brook.
Josh Fenton-Glynn, the Labour MP for Calder Valley, commented: “The flood sirens have gone off in the Upper Valley this afternoon due to a combination of heavy rain and snow melt.”
He highlighted that surface water flooding has occurred on Halifax Road at Eastwood, where crews are currently working to unblock drains. He also reported flooding at Callis, which has led to road closures, and a flood warning in Walsden.
Fenton-Glynn continued, “Other areas including Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden are under flood alerts and teams are out clearing drains. Please avoid travelling to these areas. Residents should put up flood defences if possible.
“We are at the frontline of climate shocks here in Calder Valley. Rest assured I will continue to raise the issues we face with flooding at the highest levels of government.”
Calderdale Council has advised residents to exercise caution and follow their flood preparedness plans. Many roads in the area have been closed due to surface water flooding.
The Environment Agency confirmed that officers are actively working in Calderdale, and that the floodgate at Mytholmroyd Vale has been closed in response to rising water levels.
