Beth Winter, former Labour MP for Cynon Valley (2019–2024), has resigned from the Labour Party, condemning its current “authoritarian agenda” and focus on upholding the “neoliberal status quo.”
Winter accused the party of prioritising corporate interests and protecting the ruling class at the expense of genuine socialist values.
A supporter of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Winter had previously demanded a review of the party’s selection process after losing a candidacy bid for a newly drawn seat amid boundary changes in 2023.
In her statement, she described the Labour Party’s “unprecedented persecution” of its socialist members as “disgraceful” and noted that the party has become “unrecognisable.”
Elected on Labour’s 2019 manifesto that promised a fairer and greener society, Winter affirmed her commitment to those ideals.
“Sadly, the Labour Party no longer represents that socialist vision, and I have decided to end my membership,” she said.
Winter criticised the recent Labour budget for failing to address key issues and called it a “missed opportunity” that continues austerity, inequality, and widespread poverty.
She also condemned the government’s decision to maintain the two-child benefit cap and to cut universal winter fuel payments.
The Labour Party has been approached for comment.
