Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach after parting ways with Erik ten Hag.
The announcement follows confirmation from Portuguese club Sporting CP that United had made contact regarding their manager.
Amorim, 39, has committed to a contract running until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.
He is set to officially take charge on Monday, 11 November, during the international break.
In the meantime, club icon Ruud van Nistelrooy, who served as assistant manager under Ten Hag, will lead the team on an interim basis.
Van Nistelrooy’s first match in this role saw United triumph 5-2 over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, securing a quarter-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Sky Sports News, Amorim was the sole candidate considered in United’s search for a new head coach.
The club agreed to pay Sporting an additional €1 million (£840,000) on top of the €10 million (£8.4 million) release clause to expedite his move from the Portuguese side, bypassing a 30-day notice period.
A former midfielder for Benfica and Portugal, Amorim transitioned to management in 2017 following his retirement as a player. He began his managerial career at Braga in 2019 and made a high-profile move to Sporting in 2020.
There, he quickly rose to prominence, leading Sporting to their first league title in nearly two decades in 2021 and repeating the feat last season. This season, Sporting have maintained an impeccable record, winning all nine of their matches to top the Portuguese league.
Amorim, considered one of football’s most promising young managers, notably completed an internship under Jose Mourinho during Mourinho’s tenure as United manager.
His arrival at Old Trafford comes after Ten Hag’s departure, which followed a poor start to the campaign that left United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.
Amorim’s track record and tactical acumen are seen as the keys to revitalising Manchester United’s fortunes as they aim to climb back to the top of English football.
