Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended following the circulation of a video on social media in which he allegedly makes derogatory remarks about Liverpool FC and former manager Jürgen Klopp.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced the suspension, which takes effect immediately, pending a thorough investigation.
The video, which has not been verified, shows a man who appears to be Coote discussing an encounter with Klopp following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in July 2020.
In the footage, the individual, alleged to be Coote, criticises Klopp’s behaviour during the match and uses profane language, describing the Liverpool manager as “arrogant.”
Klopp had publicly criticised Coote’s officiating after that match, claiming he failed to penalise several fouls against Liverpool players.
PGMOL is treating the video as authentic, according to a source speaking to the BBC, though the exact timing and authenticity of the video remain unconfirmed. PGMOL stated it would not provide further comment until its investigation concludes.
Liverpool FC is reportedly aware of the video but has not issued a statement. The incident has sparked significant social media debate, with fans sharing mixed opinions on the footage and Coote’s suspension.
Rick Parry, English Football League chairman, spoke to BBC Sport, saying, “PGMOL has acted swiftly to address the issue, suspending Coote and launching a full inquiry to handle the matter with professionalism.”
David Coote, 42, has been a regular Premier League official since 2018 and refereed Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Based in Nottingham, Coote is registered as a fan of Notts County and is ineligible to officiate for both Notts County and Nottingham Forest.
What Happened in the Burnley Match?
Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in July 2020 came shortly after they clinched the Premier League title.
Aiming to complete a perfect home season and potentially reach the 100-point milestone, Liverpool was on a historic run, having won 24 consecutive games at Anfield.
The Burnley match saw Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson score first, only for Jay Rodriguez to equalise, ending Liverpool’s bid for a perfect home record.
During the match, Klopp was visibly frustrated with Coote’s officiating, citing a lack of calls on Burnley’s physical challenges.
Speaking post-match, Klopp remarked, “The referee let lots of challenges go, making it clear that if the ball came into the box, it was dangerous… We were angry with the referee but had to criticise ourselves first for not finishing the game.”
Liverpool’s next match saw them lose to Arsenal, effectively ending their pursuit of a 100-point season.
As the investigation progresses, PGMOL’s findings may have further implications for Coote’s officiating career, amid ongoing discussions about refereeing standards in the Premier League.
