A community recycling centre in Bagshot, Surrey, is set to close despite overwhelming public objection, with 93% of consultation respondents opposing the decision.
The closure of the Swift Lane facility was approved by Surrey County Council (SCC), citing issues such as limited accessibility, outdated infrastructure, insufficient space for upgrades, and persistent anti-social behaviour at the site.
Two petitions against the closure garnered over 2,000 signatures ahead of Tuesday’s decision. The recycling centre, which currently receives around 920 visits per week, will redirect users to alternative facilities in Camberley, Lyne, or Woking.
During a public consultation conducted between 16 September and 11 October, 1,079 responses were submitted, with the vast majority opposing the move. However, 76% of respondents stated they would use alternative sites if necessary.
The council pointed to ongoing problems, including vandalism, fly-tipping, and unlawful entry at the Bagshot site. Staff had also faced threats from individuals attempting to dispose of prohibited materials.
Despite public concerns over increased travel inconvenience, potential congestion at alternative sites, and fears of heightened local fly-tipping, SCC defended the closure.
The council stated that prior changes, such as reduced operating hours and site closures elsewhere, have not led to significant increases in fly-tipping.
Residents are encouraged to use nearby recycling centres in Camberley, Lyne, or Woking for their waste disposal needs.
SCC maintains that these facilities will adequately serve the community while addressing the challenges posed by the outdated Bagshot centre.
While the closure has sparked widespread frustration, the council asserts that the decision aligns with its broader waste management strategy and efforts to ensure the sustainability of its recycling infrastructure.
