A 17-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being struck by a car on the M5 motorway shortly after being detained by police. The incident occurred late on Monday, at approximately 23:00 GMT, between junctions 24 (Bridgwater) and 25 (Taunton). Emergency services confirmed the teenager died at the scene, and her family has been notified. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
Following the crash, Avon and Somerset Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to their recent contact with the teenager prior to the collision. The referral ensures an independent review of the circumstances leading up to the fatal incident.
The M5 was immediately closed in both directions to facilitate a comprehensive investigation and necessary repairs, ensuring the motorway’s safety for future travelers. According to National Highways, the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 25 was reopened at 10:20 GMT on Tuesday. Work to clear and reopen the southbound carriageway is ongoing.
The crash site, near Creech Heathfield close to Taunton, has caused significant travel disruption. Motorists using local roads, including the A38 around North Petherton and Bridgwater, are facing long delays. Southbound travelers on the M5 are experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes, with congestion stretching for seven miles. Northbound traffic is delayed by 30 minutes, with congestion covering two miles.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision or motorists with dashcam footage that may assist their investigation to come forward and contact law enforcement.
