UEFA has opened an investigation following an incident where Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was struck by an object thrown from the stands during a Women’s Champions League match against Hammarby.
The Jamaican international played a pivotal role in City’s 2-1 victory at Stockholm Arena on Thursday, scoring twice to secure her team’s spot in the quarter-finals with two group games remaining.
However, controversy arose after Shaw’s animated celebration of her first goal in front of the home fans, which led to her receiving a yellow card for unsporting conduct.
Video replays appear to show an object being hurled in her direction from the crowd.
In a statement, UEFA confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Hammarby IF for violating Article 16(2)(b) of the governing body’s Disciplinary Regulations, which prohibits the throwing of objects.
The statement also acknowledged the yellow card issued to Shaw, noting it was for her goal celebration.
The incident has sparked criticism, particularly over its portrayal by broadcaster DAZN.
A social media post by DAZN on X (formerly Twitter) stated that Shaw “antagonised” the home crowd and received “stick” from the fans.
Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood strongly rebuked the description, replying: “Correction. Travel to Stockholm, score a big goal. Celebrates her goal. Gets objects thrown at her.”
Neither Manchester City nor Hammarby have commented on the matter.
Shaw’s performance was instrumental in City’s progression to the knockout stages of the competition. Her goals came either side of half-time, cementing the team’s dominance in Group A.
The investigation by UEFA adds a sour note to the game, raising concerns over player safety and fan behaviour at high-profile women’s football matches.
