Security experts and Action Fraud have issued a stark warning for UK WhatsApp users to stay vigilant when responding to messages.
Cybercriminals are actively exploiting the popular messaging app, employing sophisticated tactics to deceive users and steal substantial sums of money.
Among the most effective scams are the so-called “friend-in-need” schemes, which trick recipients into believing that a friend or family member is in urgent need of help.
The consequences of engaging with these deceptive conversations can be severe. Responding to such messages can lead unsuspecting users into seemingly harmless interactions, only to result in thousands of pounds being transferred from their bank accounts.
While it might sound implausible, the statistics tell a different story: these scams have led to millions of pounds in losses over the years.
In 2022 alone, victims were defrauded of a staggering £1.5 million through these types of scams. One recent incident involved a pensioner who nearly lost £3,500 after receiving a message from someone posing as her daughter.
The fraudster claimed to need urgent financial assistance to replace a lost Apple MacBook. Fortunately, the victim’s bank intervened and blocked the transfer, preventing a significant financial loss.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers and the importance of staying alert.
To combat these scams, Action Fraud is urging WhatsApp users to block any unfamiliar or suspicious contacts. In a public message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Action Fraud advised: “Received a strange message on WhatsApp from someone claiming to be family or a friend? Be wary of friend-in-need scams.
Report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. Press and hold on the message bubble, select ‘Report’, and then follow the instructions.”
This guidance is crucial not just for tech-savvy individuals but also for those who may be less familiar with digital threats.
Sharing these warnings with friends and family, particularly older or less tech-aware relatives, can help prevent further losses and ensure that everyone stays safe online.
