Unidentified drones have been detected over three airbases in Britain, prompting concerns about security. The United States Air Force (USAF), which operates from the bases, confirmed the sightings occurred between 20 and 22 November over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.
The USAF reported the presence of “small unmanned aerial systems” (UASs) but stated it remains unclear if the drones were hostile.
A spokesperson for US Air Forces in Europe assured that no base residents or critical infrastructure were impacted by the incursions.
“We can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems were spotted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell during this period,” the spokesperson said.
“The number and size of the UASs varied. They were actively monitored, and no impact on base operations was identified.
“To protect operational security, we do not discuss specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect our installations. We are closely monitoring the airspace and working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of personnel, facilities, and assets.”
The incidents have raised questions about the response measures employed. While the USAF declined to comment on whether defence systems were activated, it emphasised its readiness to safeguard its bases.
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) also confirmed it is taking the situation seriously. “We maintain robust measures at defence sites, including counter-drone security capabilities,” a spokesperson said. “However, we will not comment further on security procedures.”
The sightings highlight the growing challenges posed by drones to military and civilian security, with both UK and US forces committed to monitoring and addressing potential threats.
Further investigations are reportedly underway to determine the source and intent of the incursions.
