A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after driving his car into a group of party-goers on Shaftesbury Avenue, central London, in the early hours of Christmas morning.
Incident Details
The Metropolitan Police were called shortly before 1:00 am following reports of a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road and mounting the pavement.
Four pedestrians were injured in the crash, with one victim currently in a life-threatening condition in hospital.
Suspect’s Arrest
The suspect, believed to have been involved in an altercation at a nearby nightclub shortly before the incident, was apprehended within minutes by officers working in coordination with the City of London Police.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy stated, “Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement.
“Several scenes remain in place at the location today.
“This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terrorism related.”
Shaftesbury Avenue remains partially cordoned off while police investigate. Commuters and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
