Tributes have been paid to Jorge Ortega, a 61-year-old railway worker who tragically died after being assaulted at Ilford station in east London last week.
Ortega, a customer experience assistant on the Elizabeth Line, was hospitalized with severe head injuries on Wednesday evening and passed away two days later.
Jorge Ortega was described by his family as a devoted father and kind-hearted individual. They shared that he always prioritized others and left a positive impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ortega had been a dedicated member of the railway community for 24 years, according to his employer, MTREL.
The company expressed deep sorrow over his death, emphasizing the right of every worker to feel safe at their workplace.
The tragic incident has prompted calls for enhanced safety measures to protect transport workers.
The railway unions RMT and TSSA have condemned the attack and highlighted the growing dangers faced by transport staff.
Mick Lynch, RMT’s general secretary, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the union, while TSSA leader Maryam Eslamdoust called for urgent measures to address rising assaults on transport workers.
Ayodele Jamgbadi, 28, has been charged in connection with the incident, facing accusations of grievous bodily harm, affray, and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon.
He is scheduled to appear at Inner London Crown Court on January 7.
