England surged to a commanding eight-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first Test at Christchurch, thanks to standout performances from Brydon Carse and debutant Jacob Bethell.
Carse was instrumental on the fourth morning, taking three of the four wickets needed to wrap up New Zealand’s second innings.
His exceptional figures of 6-42 secured his maiden Test five-wicket haul. Combined with his four wickets in the first innings, Carse achieved match figures of 10-106.
This marks the first time an England bowler has taken a 10-wicket haul away from home since Monty Panesar in 2012 and the first by an English seamer in New Zealand since Ryan Sidebottom 16 years ago.
New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell put up a valiant fight, smashing 84 runs and forging a spirited 45-run partnership for the last wicket with Will O’Rourke.
Their efforts brought the hosts to a total of 254, leaving England with a modest target of 104 runs.
England chased down the target with ease, reaching it within just 13 overs. Jacob Bethell, making his Test debut at 21, played a vital role, scoring a rapid unbeaten 50 off 37 balls, including the winning runs.
Despite the emphatic win, there was a brief scare when captain Ben Stokes appeared to suffer an injury during his fifth over. However, Stokes has since confirmed that he will be fit for the second Test in Wellington, set to begin on Friday (22:00 GMT Thursday).
England’s tour of New Zealand marks a crucial series as they seek to build momentum following a mixed year in Test cricket.
The first Test showcased the team’s growing depth, with Carse and Bethell delivering career-defining performances. Carse’s 10-for is a rare feat for an England bowler overseas, underscoring his potential as a key figure in the pace attack.
Bethell’s impressive debut innings hints at a promising future for the young batsman, adding to England’s batting arsenal.
With the second Test looming, England hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will aim to carry forward their dominant form.
