A 61-year-old man, Christopher Barlow, has been charged with the murder of Mariann Borocz, a Hungarian woman who went missing earlier this month in Greater Manchester. Barlow is set to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Boxing Day. Borocz’s body was found at a house in Bolton on Christmas Eve, ending a nine-day search.
Search for Mariann Borocz ends in tragedy
Borocz, aged around 55, was last seen in Bolton on 14 December. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched an extensive search, classifying her as “high-risk” due to her limited English proficiency and vulnerable circumstances. Public appeals were issued in both English and Hungarian to gather information from the community.
Specialist units were deployed to aid in the search, but her body was discovered on 24 December. The remains have now been formally identified, and police are providing support to her grieving family.
Police investigation continues as community urged to help
DCI Tony Platten of GMP’s major incident team stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly as officers work to establish a full timeline of events leading up to Borocz’s death. “On behalf of the entire investigation team, our condolences remain with Mariann’s family as they try to come to terms with her death,” he said.
Platten urged the local community to come forward with any additional information that could assist the investigation. He thanked those who have already cooperated and reminded the public to contact GMP by calling 101 and quoting incident 1670 of 23 December 2024.
