Sussex Police conducted a record-breaking winter drink and drug-driving campaign, Operation Limit, throughout December, stopping over 8,000 vehicles in a bid to tackle dangerous driving.
The operation, which saw a 71% increase in stops compared to 2023, underscores the force’s commitment to making roads safer, but concerning figures on drug and alcohol-related arrests remain.
A total of 8,621 vehicles were stopped during the campaign, with 244 arrests made for drink and drug-driving offences. While the arrest numbers represent a 6% decrease from 2023, they highlight the ongoing issue of impaired driving across all age groups.
Among those arrested was a 15-year-old, far too young to legally drive, who was also suspected of being under the influence of substances. Meanwhile, the oldest individual arrested was 80 years old, showcasing the wide age range of offenders.
Over 1,500 breath tests were conducted, resulting in 112 failures or refusals. Additionally, more than 600 roadside drug wipes were used, with 217 positive results and 132 arrests for drug-related offences.
Sussex Police Chief Constable Jo Shiner expressed concern over the number of drivers caught under the influence, particularly young people.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen the consequences of people making the wrong choice and getting behind the wheel whilst under the influence of drink and drugs,” said Ms Shiner.
Youth involvement in these offences is especially worrying, with 64 arrests (23.7%) involving drivers under 25 years old and 78 arrests (28.8%) from the 26-35 age group.
“The use of recreational drugs, particularly amongst young people, is a real concern,” Shiner added.
