An Australian tourist tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident shortly after returning from a day trip to London.
Yvonne Jones, 85, had been visiting her 90-year-old sister in Essex when the incident occurred on 7 December in Benfleet.
The sisters had just been dropped off by a coach outside the Bread and Cheese pub at approximately 11:30 PM GMT when Jones was struck by a Jaguar saloon car while crossing the road.
Emergency services responded promptly, performing roadside resuscitation attempts. Sadly, Jones was pronounced dead at 12:28 AM. A coroner’s report cited a provisional cause of death as brain stem transection, with further histology and toxicology results pending.
Essex Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed to witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
Originally from Queensland, Australia, Jones had travelled to the UK to spend time with her sister. Her family released a heartfelt statement, remembering her for her “cheeky humour” and kind spirit, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Yvonne Jones, our Mum, Nan, Great Nan, Sister and Aunty,” a statement read.
“Australia has been Mum’s home for over 50 years with her children, Lee, Julie, Debbie and Tracy and their extended families and will be her final resting place.”
Area Coroner Michelle Brown suspended the inquest into Jones’ death on Friday to allow Essex Police to continue their investigation.
Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact them immediately.
