A tragic vehicle attack on New Year’s Day in New Orleans has claimed the lives of at least 14 people, including a British national. Edward Pettifer, a 31-year-old from Chelsea, London, was among the victims, the UK Foreign Office confirmed.
The incident occurred when a man drove a pick-up truck into crowds on Bourbon Street, a popular nightlife area in the city’s French Quarter. Authorities identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US Army veteran from Texas, who was later shot dead by police.
Tribute to Edward Pettifer
Edward Pettifer’s family expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement:
“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Ed in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and a friend to many. Our thoughts are with the other families affected by this horrific attack. We kindly request privacy during this time to grieve.”
Details of the Attack
The FBI confirmed the suspect acted alone in what they described as a “premeditated and evil act.” An Islamic State group flag and two improvised explosive devices were found near the scene. Before being stopped by police, the suspect reportedly exited the vehicle and fired a weapon, injuring at least 39 people.
Some of the injured victims have been released from hospitals, while others remain in intensive care. The attack, which occurred at 03:15 local time, turned Bourbon Street from a lively New Year’s celebration into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
Other Victims Identified
Among the deceased were a college football player, a young aspiring nurse, and a mother of a four-year-old. Their names were released by families before post-mortem examinations were completed.
Community Reacts Ahead of Sugar Bowl
The incident shook the local community as Bourbon Street reopened on Thursday morning, just in time for the Sugar Bowl. The annual college football match draws thousands of fans, and this year’s event between Notre Dame and the University of Georgia will proceed despite heightened security concerns.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office confirmed it is providing support to Mr. Pettifer’s family during this difficult time.
