Rail passengers faced disruption on Sunday morning after a small fire led to the evacuation of four platforms at London Waterloo, the UK’s fourth-busiest train station. South Western Railway (SWR) reported delays, cancellations, and revisions to services between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction following the incident.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed crews were called to investigate a smell of smoke at the station at around 9:30 am. Platforms 20 to 24 were temporarily closed while the fire was dealt with, but all lines reopened shortly after. SWR warned passengers to expect disruptions until 10:30 am.
Avanti West Coast Strikes Add to Travel Chaos
Further complicating Sunday travel, Avanti West Coast services were severely disrupted as members of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) Union began strike action over rest day working. The walkouts, which are scheduled to take place every Sunday until May 25, have forced Avanti to operate a reduced timetable.
On strike days, Avanti will run just one train per hour between London Euston and major cities, including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Preston. The company has advised passengers to avoid traveling on Sundays during the strike period and to plan trips on alternative days.
Passenger Advice Amid Service Disruptions
Travelers are encouraged to check service updates before heading to stations, as both the fire at London Waterloo and the Avanti strikes have caused widespread disruption. Passengers on South Western Railway and Avanti West Coast are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
