Severe snowfall has led to widespread disruption at airports and on roads across the UK, with flights delayed or diverted and major roads shut.
National Highways has reported multiple collisions on the M5, while several other routes remain impassable.
Airport Closures and Passenger Delays
Manchester Airport is among the worst affected, with runways expected to remain closed until at least 9am. Passengers stranded on flights have shared their frustrations.
“Been sat on our plane for an hour at Manchester Airport,” said passenger Andy, speaking to Sky News. “We’ve just been informed the runway closure has been extended to at least 9am, and we will remain on board until further updates.”
Leeds Bradford Airport has also announced its runway closure due to snow. In a statement, it confirmed that teams are working to clear the snow and minimise disruptions.
“The long-stay and car rental shuttle bus services are suspended until at least 10am, requiring customers to walk to the terminal,” the airport added. “Some morning departures have been rescheduled for the afternoon, and affected passengers will be contacted by their airlines.”
Liverpool John Lennon Airport has joined the list of closures, as heavy snow and ice continue to impact flight schedules across the region.
Road Closures and Collision Reports
Road travel has been equally challenging, with National Highways warning of collisions and road closures in the Midlands and the North. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and check updates before setting out.
Premier League Matches in Doubt
Liverpool City Council’s safety advisory group is set to meet this morning to determine whether the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United, scheduled for 4:30pm at Anfield, can proceed.
The city is under an amber weather warning for snow and ice until midday, and the airport closure adds further uncertainty.
Two other Premier League fixtures—Fulham vs Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Nottingham Forest—are also scheduled today, though there has been no indication of cancellations.
Weather Warnings in Place
The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings for snow and ice across much of central and northern England, remaining in effect until midnight.
Liverpool and Manchester are among the areas bracing for continued disruption through the morning.
Travellers are advised to stay updated on flight statuses and road conditions as the severe weather persists, with authorities working to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
