Bodega Cantina, a popular South American restaurant in Leicester’s St Martin’s Square, has announced its permanent closure after over eight years in business. The restaurant officially closed its doors on Sunday, citing financial challenges as the reason for the decision.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Bodega Cantina’s management said: “The decision to close has been a painful one, but the restaurant is no longer financially viable. We hope customers will join us for one last visit before we bid farewell to Leicester.”
The closure of the Leicester branch does not mark the end of Bodega Cantina entirely, as the restaurant’s Birmingham location will remain open to diners.
Hospitality Industry Struggles in Leicestershire
The closure highlights the financial pressures faced by hospitality businesses in the region. According to Allen Simpson, deputy chief executive of UK Hospitality, around 20% of hospitality businesses in Leicestershire have shuttered since the Covid pandemic.
“It’s tough to see a beloved business like Bodega Cantina close,” Simpson told BBC Radio Leicester. “This isn’t a reflection of demand but of rising costs. Hospitality businesses are grappling with soaring energy bills and food prices, forcing even successful establishments to make difficult decisions.”
Despite the challenges, Simpson expressed hope that the sector could recover with the right support, encouraging diners to continue supporting their local restaurants and businesses.
