A 53-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Claire Chick, a nurse and university lecturer, who was found with fatal injuries on a street in Plymouth. The incident occurred on West Hoe Road at 8:55 pm on Wednesday. Emergency services transported the 48-year-old to the hospital, but she tragically passed away in the early hours of Thursday.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Paul Butler, from Stangray Avenue, Plymouth, was arrested on Thursday in the Liskeard area of Cornwall, approximately 20 miles from the scene of the crime. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that Butler has been charged with murder and is scheduled to appear at Plymouth Magistrates Court on Monday.
A Respected Nurse and Lecturer
Claire Chick, previously known as Claire Butler, was an esteemed nurse, lecturer, and associate head of school for international at the University of Plymouth’s School of Nursing and Midwifery. She played a pivotal role in developing nursing programs across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
In a statement, the University of Plymouth praised her dedication: “Claire was a nurse, lecturer, personal tutor, and an integral part of our nursing and midwifery team. Her contributions to global nursing education will leave a lasting legacy.”
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Chick’s family expressed their grief and love in a statement: “We are absolutely devastated and broken at the loss of our beautiful, caring mother, Claire Chick. She was the most beautiful, lively soul and brought joy wherever she went.
“She loved to dance and sing, even if she wasn’t the best at it. She was the glue of our family and the life of any room she entered. No amount of justice will bring her back, but we will forever remember her as the vibrant, loving person she was.”
