The Metropolitan Police is set to investigate two complaints about its handling of allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed under the direction of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The complaints are part of a broader review into 21 allegations made before the former Harrods owner passed away in 2023.
The allegations against Al Fayed gained renewed attention after a BBC documentary aired in September 2023, exposing a history of alleged predatory behavior. The documentary revealed that 21 women had accused Al Fayed of sexual offences, including rape, sexual assault, and trafficking, prior to his death, but he was never charged. Following the broadcast, 90 additional women came forward, claiming offences dating back to 1977.
Complaints Over Police Handling and Public Disclosures
The two complaints under investigation were referred to the IOPC in November. They were filed by two women who reported their allegations to the police in 2008 and raised concerns after the documentary aired. The complaints address the quality of the police response at the time and the circumstances surrounding the public disclosure of their allegations.
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) will handle the investigation under IOPC direction. According to a Met statement, the investigation aims to uncover any missed opportunities or failures in handling the reports.
Steve Noonan, IOPC Director of Operations, said, “There is widespread public concern around this case, with a significant number of allegations reported over many years while Mr. Al Fayed was still alive. It’s important to identify whether officers failed to investigate these reports properly.”
Wider Investigation Into Al Fayed’s Alleged Offences
The complaints are part of a broader review by the Met into allegations against Al Fayed, with investigations extending beyond the initial 21 cases. A new inquiry launched in November is focusing on individuals who may have enabled or facilitated Al Fayed’s alleged offences. The force is examining whether these individuals could have protected victims and what roles they played in the abuse.
The IOPC emphasized that complainants will be kept informed throughout the investigation, as the scope could widen further.
This case continues to draw significant public interest as the allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed and those potentially complicit in his actions are scrutinized.
