NatWest has announced the closure of nine branches across the West Midlands and Cheshire as part of its latest round of closures.
The affected locations include five branches in Staffordshire, three in Cheshire, and one in Shropshire.
The decision follows a significant drop in counter transactions, with figures showing a reduction of more than 50% when comparing data from October 2019 to October 2024.
In contrast, the bank reported that more than 80% of its active customers now use digital services, and over 97% of new accounts are opened online.
The following NatWest branches will close as per the latest announcement:
Staffordshire:
Cannock – 12 May
Leek – 16 June
Longton, Stoke-on-Trent – 5 June
Stafford Greengate – 25 June
Uttoxeter – 2 June
Shropshire:
Market Drayton – The branch will remain open until the town’s Banking Hub is operational.
Cheshire:
Nantwich – 19 June
Ellesmere Port town centre – 4 June
Wilmslow – 20 May
While NatWest is closing physical branches, it has committed to continuing investment in alternative methods for in-person banking, including partnerships with the Post Office and the establishment of Banking Hubs. These hubs are designed to support customers who still require face-to-face banking services.
NatWest also believes that digital banking provides inclusive and accessible options for all customers, including the elderly and vulnerable.
The bank acknowledged that there will be a small group of customers who may find the transition challenging but assured that it is actively reaching out to assist them.
A spokesperson for the bank said, “We are proactively reaching out to support them with this transition, having made over 200,000 calls last year.
“We also have experts that they can speak to for support and guidance.”
NatWest is prioritising customer support during this transition, offering personalised guidance to help individuals adjust to digital banking.
While the move towards online services may be a significant change, the bank is working to ensure that all customers can continue to access the banking services they need in the most effective way possible.
