The UK Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine amid growing concerns over Russia’s alleged use of chemical weapons in the ongoing conflict.
In response to questions raised by Mark Francois, Conservative MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, regarding the implications of these reports for UK defence policies, Luke Pollard, the Armed Forces Minister, confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is closely monitoring the evolving threat landscape in Ukraine, which includes the illegal use of chemical weapons by Russia.
Pollard pointed to Russia’s admission of using Riot Control Agents (RCAs) in warfare and confirmed reports of the toxic choking agent chloropicrin being deployed by Russian forces.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) published a Technical Report in December 2023 confirming the use of RCAs in Ukraine.
The UK has been a key player in bolstering Ukraine’s defences against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats.
Pollard highlighted the UK’s role in providing critical support, stating that the UK has been at the forefront of international efforts to assist Ukraine with CBRN defence capabilities.
The UK has supplied Ukraine with vital equipment, including respirators and decontamination kits for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In December 2024, following a direct request from Ukraine, the UK unveiled an additional support package, which included funding for further protective equipment.
This initiative was part of a broader effort through the G7-led Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction, which the UK has played a key role in.
Pollard reassured that the UK remains resolute in its commitment to countering CBRN threats in Ukraine, and continues to work closely with international partners to ensure coordinated support.
He reaffirmed, “Our commitment to Ukraine is unwavering, and we continue to work closely with our international partners to coordinate counter-CBRN support and assistance.”
