A UK court has ruled that an American woman accused of killing two of her children can be extradited to the US.
Kimberlee Singler, 36, faces charges of murdering her nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son in their Colorado Springs home in December 2023. She is also charged with the attempted murder of her 11-year-old daughter.
Singler had contested her extradition on the basis that, if convicted, she would receive a mandatory life sentence without parole, arguing this would violate her human rights.
However, her appeal was dismissed by a judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The decision on whether Singler will be extradited now rests with the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper. During the court proceedings, District Judge John Zani informed Singler, “Ms. Singler, I’m afraid I have rejected a challenge to your extradition.
The case now passes to the Secretary of State for a decision on whether extradition is to be ordered. You have the right to ask the High Court for permission to appeal against my decision and to appeal against the Secretary of State’s decision.”
Singler was detained in Kensington, West London, by the UK’s National Crime Agency in December 2023.
Following a reported burglary, police discovered the bodies of two of Singler’s children at their home in Colorado Springs, presenting both stab and gunshot wounds. Colorado police later determined that the burglary report was unfounded.
It is alleged by US prosecutors that the killings occurred amidst a drawn-out custody dispute with Singler’s former partner. Initially cooperative with the investigation, Singler vanished as inquiries progressed, leading to her arrest in the UK.
