The UK continues to attract skilled workers worldwide, maintaining its status as a leading destination for professionals seeking opportunities abroad.
However, recent data from the UK Home Office highlights notable trends and shifts in visa applications, particularly in the health and care sectors.
Health and Care Worker Visas: Sharp Decline in Applications
The introduction of care workers to the Shortage Occupation List in early 2022 led to a surge in Health and Care Worker visa applications.
Monthly applications from main applicants increased from 4,100 in February 2022 to a peak of 18,300 in August 2023.
However, applications have significantly decreased since August 2023, with just 2,000 submitted in December 2024.
From April to December 2024, there were 21,300 applications from main applicants, marking an 82% drop compared to the same period in 2023.
This decline follows policy changes introduced in March 2024, affecting social care workers and their families.
Additionally, increased scrutiny of employers in the health and social care sectors, alongside compliance measures targeting employers of migrant workers, has contributed to the downturn.
Dependent Applications Follow Similar Trend
Applications for dependants on the Health and Care Worker visa route mirrored the rise and fall of main applicants.
Dependant applications peaked at 23,300 in August 2023 but fell sharply to 3,900 by December 2024. Between April and December 2024, there were 42,500 dependant applications, a 76% reduction compared to the same period in 2023.
Skilled Worker Visas Show Greater Stability
In contrast, Skilled Worker visa applications have remained relatively stable. Monthly applications from main applicants averaged 6,000 between January 2022 and March 2024. A temporary spike in April 2024 saw applications rise to 10,100, but they declined again, reaching 4,200 by December 2024.
Between April and December 2024, 50,900 Skilled Worker visa applications were submitted, only 6% fewer than during the same months in 2023. Dependant applications on this route remained consistent, with 42,900 applications recorded in the same period, comparable to 2023 levels.
Evolving Trends in Migration Policy
The data underscores the impact of policy changes and increased regulatory scrutiny on the health and care sector, particularly for migrant workers and their dependents.
While the UK remains a sought-after destination for skilled professionals, these shifts indicate a changing landscape for visa applicants and employers in key sectors.
As the government continues to refine immigration policies, the focus will likely remain on balancing labour market demands with compliance and oversight, shaping the future of skilled migration to the UK.
