The driver involved in the tragic car crash that killed two eight-year-old girls at a Wimbledon school tea party has been re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The Metropolitan Police reopened the investigation after reviewing the case, following concerns raised by the families of the victims, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau.
The crash occurred on July 6, 2023, at the Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon, southwest London. Claire Freemantle, 48, was initially arrested at the scene but was not charged after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) concluded that she had suffered an epileptic seizure, causing her to lose control of her vehicle. The CPS stated at the time that her epilepsy had never previously manifested.
Families Welcome Investigation Reopening
The families of the victims expressed gratitude for the reopening of the investigation in October 2024, emphasizing the need for a thorough pursuit of truth and facts. “It is important that this investigation runs its course unhindered,” they said, highlighting the ongoing emotional and psychological toll on those affected.
The headteacher of the school, Sharon Maher, also welcomed the renewed investigation, urging witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact the police. “Our thoughts always remain with the families of Selena and Nuria and the Study community affected by this tragedy,” she added.
Police Call for Witnesses
The Metropolitan Police have identified new lines of inquiry through a specialist crime review group and are urging witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford assured the public that the case remains a priority. “This is a live investigation, and I would urge people to avoid speculation,” he said.
Community Impact and Ongoing Challenges
The tragedy left deep scars on hundreds of individuals, including parents, teachers, children, and neighbors, who continue to struggle with its aftermath. Nuria Sajjad’s parents previously voiced frustration over delays in the investigation, which they were told stemmed from a lack of forensic resources.
The crash also drew significant attention to the health conditions of drivers and the legal implications of medical emergencies behind the wheel.
The police and families remain committed to uncovering the full truth, with a renewed plea for anyone with information to come forward.
