English football is set for a technological upgrade as semi-automated offside technology will be used in domestic competitions for the first time during the FA Cup fifth round. The Football Association (FA) confirmed that the system will be implemented in seven matches hosted at Premier League stadiums.
Following successful deployment in the Emirates FA Cup, the Premier League is expected to introduce the technology later this season. This move follows the unanimous approval of Premier League clubs for its use in the 2024-25 season, initially scheduled for October 2024 but later postponed for additional testing.
How Semi-Automated Offside Technology Works
Originally introduced by UEFA in the Champions League during the 2022-23 season, semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) is designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of offside decisions. The system utilizes optical player tracking to determine the exact placement of the virtual offside line, providing quicker and more consistent rulings.
In a statement, the FA explained:
“Semi-Automated Offside Technology will provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.”
The governing body emphasized that while the technology does not change the accuracy of offside decisions, it significantly improves the speed and efficiency of the process.
VAR and Semi-Automated Offside to Feature in All FA Cup Fifth-Round Games
In addition to SAOT, Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be in operation across all eight FA Cup fifth-round matches, including the fixture at Championship side Preston. Match officials will also provide in-stadium VAR announcements, offering fans greater transparency on key decisions.
The FA Cup fifth round is set to take place on the weekend of Saturday, 1 March, marking a historic milestone for English domestic football as semi-automated offside technology is introduced for the first time.
