A tragic e-scooter accident in Essex claimed the lives of 16-year-old Roman Casselden and his nine-year-old sister Darcie Casselden, an inquest has revealed. The siblings suffered fatal head injuries when they were struck by a car in Pitsea, near Basildon, on February 1.
Inquest Reveals Devastating Details
During the opening of the inquest at Essex Coroner’s Court, area coroner Michelle Brown described the incident as a “tragic” loss of two young lives. The siblings were riding an e-scooter when they were hit by a car near the Stokefelde junction with Ashlyns at approximately 6:25 PM GMT.
According to the coroner, both children were pronounced dead at the scene due to “traumatic head injuries.” Their mother later identified them, marking an unbearable loss for the grieving family.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Essex Police confirmed that a man and a woman in their 20s were arrested in connection with the fatal crash. The man has been released under investigation, while the woman was bailed until April 4 as authorities continue their inquiries.

Following the devastating accident, the children’s mother, Emma Casselden, shared an emotional tribute, calling her children her “beautiful angels.” She described Roman as having a “heart of gold” and Darcie as “a soul filled with creativity and beauty.”
