A large fire broke out at Dyfrig House, a supported accommodation unit operated by Pobl in Cardiff’s Riverside area, just before midnight on Monday, March 4. The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded quickly to the incident, evacuating 21 residents as the fire damaged parts of the building’s roof.
No Injuries Reported as Residents Moved to Safety
Despite the severity of the blaze, no injuries were reported. Emergency responders ensured that all residents were safely evacuated to an alternative Pobl-managed scheme with assistance from the local authority. Neighbors along Fitzhamon Embankment were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke spreading towards Cardiff Bay.
Fire Investigation Underway
Fire crews worked through the night and left the scene in the early hours of Tuesday, March 5. Investigators are now assessing the cause of the blaze and the extent of the damage.
Pobl Responds to the Incident
Lorraine Griffiths, Assistant Director at Pobl, expressed relief that no one was harmed, despite disappointment over the damage. Nick Taylor, Director of Support at Pobl, confirmed that residents had been rehoused with local authority support and thanked emergency responders for their swift action.
“It is too early to say when residents will be able to return,” Taylor stated.
The incident has raised concerns over fire safety in supported housing facilities, with authorities expected to review safety protocols following the investigation.
