Five individuals have been detained under suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of a young man in Wolverhampton.
Emergency responders were summoned to Eastfield Grove, mere steps away from a local primary school, shortly after 15:20 GMT on Tuesday.
West Midlands Police confirmed that the victim, a man in his 20s, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 48, were apprehended in Birmingham on Wednesday evening and are currently held in custody, according to police representatives.
Authorities describe the arrests as a major breakthrough in the case, urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
Additionally, a second victim is receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds.
As a security measure, Eastfield Primary School was temporarily secured during the incident, which coincided with the school’s dismissal time.
The lockdown lasted approximately 40 minutes to ensure the safety of the students and staff, stated a representative from the city council.
The police continue to seek further information and encourage the public to submit any relevant mobile phone, doorbell, or dashcam footage.
Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards remarked, “A young man has tragically lost his life, and our teams are diligently working to piece together the events and motives behind this incident.”
An online portal has also been established to facilitate the submission of information, videos, or images related to the shooting.
