A burst water main in Durham’s city centre has led to significant flooding and disrupted water supplies to approximately 3,000 properties.
The incident occurred on Saddler Street just before 07:00 GMT, causing nearby areas, including Market Square and Elvet Bridge, to become submerged.
Northumbrian Water responded promptly, deploying teams to address the rupture. Despite re-zoning efforts within the network, around 3,000 properties continue to experience water supply issues as repairs proceed.
The flooding has necessitated road closures, and several local businesses have been compelled to shut down temporarily.
A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water stated: Our teams attended quickly and are currently on site carrying out repairs; however, we expect that the road will need to be closed this morning due to flooding.
The network has been re-zoned, but around 3,000 properties may still be seeing issues with their water supply while our teams continue to carry out repairs.
Residents and businesses are advised to stay updated on the situation and follow guidance from local authorities as repair efforts continue.
