England’s head coach Jon Lewis has been dismissed after a disastrous Ashes series, culminating in a historic 16-0 defeat by Australia.
Appointed in November 2022, Lewis’ tenure came under scrutiny following a dismal performance that marked the first time any team has lost every match in an Ashes series since the inception of the multi-format points system in 2013.
The decision was made after a comprehensive review led by Clare Connor, England’s director of women’s cricket.
This catastrophic tour followed a disastrous T20 World Cup, where England was ousted early due to crucial errors, including several dropped catches during a match against West Indies.
After the Ashes, the 49-year-old Lewis expressed a desire to continue as head coach. In contrast, Captain Heather Knight indicated she would take time to contemplate her future, which might still involve leading the team under new coaching.
Reflecting on his tenure, Lewis stated his enjoyment and commitment to advancing women’s cricket in England, despite his premature departure. He pledged to continue supporting the development of the sport.
Potential successors for the coaching role include former England captain Charlotte Edwards and Jon Lewis of the England A team.
Additionally, Mark Robinson, who led England to victory in the 2017 World Cup, is considered a contender after recently accepting a temporary position at Sussex.
The incoming coach will face immediate challenges, including home white-ball series against West Indies and India, followed by a World Cup in India later in the year. The new appointment will aim to end a trophy drought extending back to the 2017 World Cup.
Previously a fast-bowling coach for the England men’s team, Lewis had taken over from Australian Lisa Keightley.
His high point was a drawn Ashes series against Australia in 2023, although his record in T20 World Cups was less successful.
Following England’s recent T20 World Cup exit, former spinner Alex Hartley criticized some squad members’ fitness levels, highlighting internal challenges during the Ashes tour.
