An 11-year-old girl has tragically died after being hit by a car moments after stepping off her school bus in Castledawson, County Londonderry.
Caitlin-Rose McMullan was struck on Wednesday afternoon at around 4pm. Her school, St Pius X College in Magherafelt, described her as a caring, bubbly, and outgoing pupil who was always smiling. Teachers fondly remembered her as a joy to teach due to her kind and fun-loving nature.
The school community has been left heartbroken by her sudden passing, with support being provided to her classmates and staff.
Stormont’s Education Minister, Paul Givan, expressed his deep sorrow, saying that no parent ever expects to receive such devastating news after sending their child to school.
He has assured the school of his full support, and the Education Authority’s critical incident team is now working with staff and students to provide assistance.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched an investigation into the incident and is urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has video footage to come forward.
Officers have requested that any footage be shared directly with police rather than on social media to aid their inquiries.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many paying tribute to Caitlin-Rose and offering their condolences to her grieving family.
