Two individuals have perished following a grave collision near Oxford, resulting in the closure of the M40, which is expected to remain shut through the afternoon, Thames Valley Police have confirmed.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:40 PM on Monday, led to the deaths of both men at the scene, while two others were urgently transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
National Highways has indicated that there is no scheduled time for reopening the motorway, suggesting it is likely to stay closed during the morning’s peak travel hours and into the afternoon.
Currently, the closure affects both directions between Bicester and Tiddington as police investigations are underway.
Motorists have been advised to reroute their travel through Oxford to bypass the closed sections of the M40, where significant congestion has formed on the A34, A40, and A4142.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police stated, “A full road closure has been implemented on the M40 in both directions between junctions 9 and 8a due to a fatal road traffic accident.”
“The collision took place around 10:41 PM last night. Tragically, two men died at the scene and two others have been hospitalised with serious injuries. We urge the public to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while our officers continue their work at the scene.”
