The UK‘s National Police Air Service (NPAS) has confirmed an order for seven Airbus H135 helicopters as part of its fleet renewal programme.
The deal was made through the BlueLight Commercial procurement agency, securing Airbus as the sole supplier for up to six years.
These new helicopters will replace some of the oldest and most heavily used aircraft in the UK police fleet, which were inherited from individual forces when NPAS was established over 13 years ago.
Chief Superintendent Vicki White, NPAS Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager, highlighted the significance of the upgrade.
With over 100 calls for air support each day, NPAS plays a vital role in saving lives, combating crime, and safeguarding communities. She expressed excitement about collaborating with Airbus and revealed that the first new helicopter is expected to arrive in 2027.
Airbus has been the exclusive provider of NPAS helicopters since its inception. Richard Atack, Interim Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in the UK, expressed pride in the continued partnership and appreciation for NPAS’s trust in awarding Airbus its first fleet renewal contract.
Currently, NPAS operates 16 Airbus H135s and four H145s from 14 bases across England and Wales, supporting 43 police forces. Airbus also handles maintenance and support for these helicopters, which are some of the most heavily used police aircraft worldwide.
The new H135 helicopters will be equipped with Airbus’ Helionix avionics system, designed to enhance safety and reduce pilot workload. One of the helicopters will be designated for pilot training on the new system before the rest of the fleet enters service.
