More than 40 flats were evacuated after a large fire broke out overnight in a residential building in Dover, Kent.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning on Crabble Hill, prompting a significant emergency response.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) received reports of the blaze at approximately 01:10 BST. In response, twelve fire engines and two height vehicles were dispatched to the scene to tackle the flames and prevent further damage.
As of late Sunday afternoon, KFRS confirmed that all 12 fire engines were still present, though the number was expected to reduce later in the day. Crews are expected to remain on site overnight to continue managing the aftermath and ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Kent Police are at the scene supporting the ongoing response, and South East Coast Ambulance Service has also been contacted for assistance.
A total of 42 flats were evacuated as a precaution. Dover District Council has stepped in to offer emergency accommodation and support for those affected. KFRS’s volunteer response team was also deployed to provide welfare support for both residents and firefighting crews.
This incident comes amid wider concerns over fire safety in multi-occupancy residential buildings across the UK.
Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017, local authorities and housing associations have increased scrutiny over fire prevention measures in flats and apartment blocks. While there is no indication yet of fire safety failings in this incident, investigations are ongoing.
Residents who have been displaced are being supported by local services, and authorities have urged anyone affected to reach out for help.
Further updates are expected as fire crews continue their work and as the investigation into the cause of the fire develops.
