The United Kingdom is set to dramatically increase the domestic production of 155mm artillery shells, aiming to multiply its output sixteenfold by the summer. This strategic move is designed to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly the United States and France, and to ensure greater self-sufficiency in the face of growing global security tensions.
According to The Times, special cargo containers will be deployed across Great Britain to facilitate the production of RDX, a powerful explosive crucial in manufacturing 155mm shells. This step marks a significant investment in Britain’s defence manufacturing infrastructure, spearheaded by the British defence industry.
Concerns Over US Reliability Under Trump Influence
The decision to accelerate domestic production is partly driven by rising concerns over the reliability of American defence supplies, particularly in the event of Donald Trump’s return to office. European and British companies have reportedly begun distancing themselves from American military equipment suppliers, citing fears of political instability and disrupted trade partnerships.
A Response to the War in Ukraine
The sharp increase in shell production responds to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which has caused soaring demand for NATO-standard ammunition. Until now, BAE Systems, a leading UK defence contractor, imported RDX primarily from the USA and France. The shift to local production will not only ensure a more stable supply but also strengthen the UK’s long-term strategic autonomy.
Ongoing Defence Support to Ukraine
In a related move, the UK and Norway recently pledged £450 million to provide Ukraine with essential military support, including drones, radar systems, and anti-tank mines.
