A British tourist has died in Segovia after falling from a scenic viewing platform overlooking the city’s world-famous Roman aqueduct, local authorities have confirmed.
The 63-year-old man, who held a British passport, was visiting the historic Spanish city with two other people and had arrived on Thursday. He tragically fell from the Postigo del Consuelo lookout shortly after 1pm local time on Saturday.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the site. His identity has not yet been released.
Man Lost Balance While Sitting on Ledge
Local media, including El Norte de Castilla, reported that the man had been sitting on the ledge of the staircase that leads to the viewing platform when he lost his balance and fell backwards. The viewpoint is located within the remains of Segovia’s medieval city walls and is a popular destination for tourists due to its panoramic views.
The lookout offers an iconic perspective of the ancient Roman aqueduct, which stretches over 800 metres and reaches more than 28 metres in height at its tallest point. Believed to date back to around AD 50, the structure once transported water to Segovia and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985.
Investigation Launched into Fatal Fall
As per standard procedure in Spain, judicial authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death. Officials are gathering witness testimonies and examining the scene to confirm the incident was accidental.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who has died in Spain, and are in touch with the local authorities.”
The tragedy has raised concerns about safety measures at tourist landmarks, particularly those involving elevated viewpoints.
