Leaked messages from HMP Parc prison in Wales have revealed prison staff mocking violent assaults on inmates and joking about incidents of self-harm, raising serious concerns about staff conduct at the privately run facility in Bridgend.
Prison Staff Mock Inmate Violence and Self-Harm
The leaked communications, reportedly shared on social media in the summer of 2024, show staff at HMP Parc exchanging disturbing comments. In one message, a staff member said, “The prisoners need to be broken mentally and physically.” Another message describes an inmate being “smashed into the shower lol,” with a follow-up response saying, “Good! I hope they hurt him too.”
One prison worker admitted to punching an inmate who bit them, writing “there’s some closure” and adding a laughing emoji. Other messages joked about prisoners at risk of suicide or involved in severe self-harming.
G4S Responds to Leaks and Ongoing Investigations
G4S, the private security company that manages HMP Parc, said it maintains a zero tolerance policy for any staff behavior that breaches its standards. In a statement, G4S confirmed that of the four custody officers previously arrested, three have been dismissed, and one remains suspended pending an internal disciplinary process.
South Wales Police have been conducting a broader investigation into misconduct at HMP Parc. So far, multiple arrests have been made, including a recent phase in January 2025. The individuals, from various parts of South Wales, have either been bailed or released under investigation.
HMP Parc Under National Scrutiny
HMP Parc recorded 17 inmate deaths in 2024, the highest of any UK prison that year. In October 2024, Prisons Minister James Timpson confirmed the prison service’s corruption unit was reviewing conditions at the facility.
Detective Chief Inspector Dean Taylor of South Wales Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and that officers are working closely with G4S to identify all instances of abuse or misconduct.
G4S reiterated: “Our staff are expected to treat everyone with dignity and respect… we are absolutely committed to rooting out any wrongdoing.”
