Authorities in Colombia have offered a $12,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the brutal murder of an Italian tourist.
The victim, Alessandro Coatti, had recently travelled from London after working for eight years at the Royal Biological Society.
The 42-year-old molecular biologist’s dismembered remains were found inside a suitcase on the outskirts of Santa Marta, prompting an urgent police investigation.
The discovery has shaken the local community and intensified efforts to identify those behind the crime.
Santa Marta’s Mayor, Carlos Pinedo, took to social media to assure the public that justice would be served. He vowed to bring those responsible to justice, stating that criminal activity would not be tolerated in the city.
Coatti, originally from Italy, had been in South America conducting research on local animal species. He had recently left his role at the Royal Biological Society to volunteer in Ecuador and explore the continent.
The Royal Biological Society expressed deep sorrow at his passing, praising Coatti for his dedication and contributions to science.
A spokesperson for the Royal Biological Society described Coatti as a passionate and intelligent scientist who had worked as both a Science Policy Officer and Senior Science Policy Officer.
The organisation highlighted his significant role in animal science work and his numerous contributions, including writing submissions and organising events. He was known for his warmth, humour, and commitment to his work, and his loss has left a profound impact on colleagues and friends.
In Santa Marta, a hotel worker revealed that Coatti had shown interest in visiting the village of Minca and had been conducting field research on local species.
The area, surrounded by beautiful beaches and mountains, is a popular destination for international tourists but has struggled with rising crime levels. In 2024, police in Santa Marta recorded 194 murders, highlighting the city’s ongoing issues with criminal activity.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on bringing justice to Coatti and his family, with local police and national law enforcement working together to identify the perpetrators behind this horrific crime.
