A major fire involving heavy goods vehicles broke out on Ennis Close in Wythenshawe early this morning, prompting emergency evacuations and road closures. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed that the blaze started just after 08:00 GMT at the Roundthorn Industrial Estate, near Wythenshawe Hospital.
Firefighters Battle Blaze for Hours
At the height of the fire, ten fire engines were deployed to contain the flames, though the response was scaled back to four engines after nearly three hours as crews worked to bring it under control. GMFRS urged residents to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke in the area and to avoid the vicinity for safety reasons.
Eyewitnesses Report Loud Explosions
Local resident Ben Meighan-Carey, who lives near the site, described hearing loud noises similar to “fireworks,” which quickly intensified. “There were constant bangs that sounded like explosions for five to ten minutes,” he said. “I looked outside, and there was loads of smoke.”
Emergency Services on Scene
Firefighters from across Greater Manchester were deployed to tackle the incident. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and the North West Ambulance Service were also on site, assisting with evacuations and securing the area. GMP confirmed that a cordon was put in place, and several roads, including Ledson Road, Floats Road, and part of Southmoor Road, were closed due to safety concerns.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, and investigations are expected to continue throughout the day.
