NHS England’s national medical director, Prof Sir Stephen Powis, who played a crucial role in advising ministers and the public during the Covid-19 pandemic, will step down in July 2024 after more than seven years in the role.
Powis, 64, became one of the most recognized figures during the pandemic, appearing in more government press briefings than any other NHS or medical leader. His departure follows the recent resignation of Amanda Pritchard, NHS England’s chief executive, as part of a broader restructuring of the NHS’s relationship with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).
Leadership Changes at NHS England
Powis’s exit comes as Sir Jim Mackey takes over as NHS England’s new chief executive, succeeding Pritchard in April. Mackey is expected to reshape the senior leadership team and streamline NHS England’s workforce, which currently stands at 13,000 employees.
Announcing his departure, Powis reflected on his time in the role, stating:
“My time in post has been dominated by the pandemic and its ongoing impact. I will forever be humbled by the extraordinary work of staff throughout the NHS during the greatest health emergency in a century.”
Health Secretary Praises Powis’s Contributions
Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, praised Powis’s leadership and impact, highlighting his contributions to the Covid-19 vaccine rollout and national patient safety strategy.
“Steve has provided outstanding clinical leadership, including during the biggest health emergency in modern history. His knowledge, professionalism, and guidance helped the NHS rise to the challenges created by the pandemic.”
Who Will Succeed Stephen Powis?
Several names have emerged as potential candidates to replace Powis as NHS England’s top medical leader.
Dr Claire Fuller, a GP known for leading a 2022 primary care review, is currently the frontrunner. Other contenders include:
• Dr Vin Diwakar, a paediatrician and NHS England’s national director of transformation
• Stella Vig, a surgeon and joint national director for planned care
With NHS leadership undergoing a major transformation, the appointment of Powis’s successor will be a critical decision for the future of healthcare policy and patient care in England.
