UK high street retailer Matalan has announced the closure of another branch, alongside the launch of a major 50% discount sale across its stores.
The fashion and homeware chain confirmed it will shut its Colne store at North Valley Retail Park, Lancashire, with the final day of trading set for 7 March. Customers have been advised they will no longer be able to shop at the location after that date.
As part of the announcement, Matalan has introduced a significant sale, offering shoppers up to 50 per cent off selected items. The discount applies across a wide range of clothing and homeware products.
A spokesperson for Matalan said: “Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Accrington or Blackburn stores.”
The Colne branch is not the only location affected. Matalan has also confirmed that its Carlisle store will close on 7 March to make way for a redevelopment project.
The Carlisle retail park site is set to be transformed into a new southern entrance for Carlisle station as part of the Carlisle Station Gateway redevelopment scheme, designed to create a more welcoming gateway to the city.
Meanwhile, staff at the Leeds branch were redeployed after the store closed permanently on 24 February.
Despite the closures, Matalan has signalled plans for further investment. In December, the retailer revealed it would refurbish 40 stores in 2026, ten more than originally planned, after its 2025 upgrade programme led to improved sales.
Last year, the company completed 30 refurbishments as part of a £25 million investment in its physical store estate. According to Matalan, refurbished sites are outperforming the wider retail network by 14 per cent in sales.
Founded in 1985 by British businessman John Hargreaves, Matalan now operates more than 200 stores across the UK alongside its growing e-commerce platform.
