A newly elected Reform UK councillor has been suspended from the party following allegations of racism and misogyny, intensifying scrutiny of the party’s candidate vetting procedures after its major gains in local elections across England.
Glenn Gibbins, who was elected to represent the Hylton Castle ward on Sunderland City Council, was suspended pending an internal investigation after historic online posts allegedly targeting Sunderland’s Nigerian community resurfaced.
The controversy emerged only days after Reform UK celebrated sweeping local election victories that saw the party take control of multiple councils and establish itself as a growing political force challenging both Labour and the Conservatives.
Reform UK Takes Control in Sunderland
The suspension comes shortly after Reform UK secured control of Sunderland City Council during Thursday’s local elections.
The party made significant gains across several regions of England, benefiting from voter dissatisfaction over immigration, the economy, public services and the cost of living crisis.
Gibbins was among a wave of Reform candidates elected during the local elections, which marked one of the party’s strongest performances since its formation.
However, the allegations against him have quickly shifted attention away from Reform’s electoral success and raised fresh concerns over the party’s screening process for candidates.
Racism Allegations Trigger Suspension
According to reports highlighted by anti-extremism organisation Hope Not Hate, Gibbins allegedly published racist comments online directed at Sunderland’s Nigerian community in March 2024.
The posts were reportedly later deleted, but screenshots circulated online after his election victory.
Gibbins has also faced allegations involving misogynistic comments in older social media activity.
Speaking on BBC Politics North, Darren Grimes confirmed the councillor had been suspended from Reform UK while an investigation is carried out.
Grimes described the allegations as “very serious” and acknowledged the controversy represented a failure in the party’s candidate vetting process.
“I accept that,” he said when asked directly whether the situation reflected weaknesses in Reform UK’s screening procedures.
Reform UK Faces Growing Scrutiny
The incident has intensified wider scrutiny of Reform UK as the party expands rapidly across Britain.
Political opponents have increasingly questioned whether the party’s rapid growth has outpaced its ability to properly vet candidates and maintain internal standards.
Critics argue Reform UK’s anti-establishment positioning and aggressive political messaging have attracted controversial figures and created reputational risks for the party leadership.
The allegations also arrive at a politically sensitive time for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whose party is experiencing record support in national polling and local elections.
Richard Tice Defends Party Amid Backlash
Richard Tice defended the party during an appearance on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.
Tice condemned inappropriate behaviour but argued voters had rejected what he described as political “smearing and sneering” against Reform UK.
He said the public remained focused on issues such as immigration, economic stagnation and dissatisfaction with both Labour and Conservative governments.
“Like any party we have internal processes to investigate where people may have said or done the wrong thing,” Tice said.
He also attempted to draw comparisons with allegations involving politicians from other parties, including controversies surrounding some Green Party figures.
However, critics accused Reform UK of attempting to deflect attention rather than directly addressing the allegations.
Labour and Conservatives Criticise Reform
Senior Labour politicians said the controversy reflected deeper problems within Reform UK’s political culture.
Bridget Phillipson, who also serves as MP for Sunderland, described the case as evidence of “division and racism” entering mainstream politics.
Labour has increasingly targeted Reform UK over rhetoric on immigration and national identity, warning that political discourse in Britain has become more polarised.
Meanwhile, James Cleverly criticised Tice after he referenced allegations involving other parties during television interviews.
Cleverly argued that all forms of racism should be condemned equally, regardless of the targeted group.
Reform UK’s Rise Reshapes UK Politics
The controversy comes during a period of dramatic political change in Britain.
Reform UK has emerged as a major challenger to the traditional dominance of Labour and the Conservatives, particularly in working-class communities frustrated by economic pressures and public service challenges.
The party’s success in recent elections reflects broader voter dissatisfaction with mainstream politics following years of political instability, Brexit divisions, inflation and rising migration debates.
However, rapid expansion has also exposed Reform UK to increased media and political scrutiny.
Analysts say the party’s ability to manage controversies and maintain discipline among elected representatives could become increasingly important as it seeks to position itself as a serious national political force.
Vetting Processes Under Pressure
The suspension has renewed debate about candidate vetting standards across British politics.
Major parties have repeatedly faced controversies involving candidates accused of racism, antisemitism, sexism or extremist views, often linked to historic social media activity.
The speed of local election campaigns and the recruitment of large numbers of candidates can make comprehensive screening difficult, especially for fast-growing parties.
Political experts say Reform UK’s rapid expansion may increase the risk of similar incidents unless stronger vetting systems are introduced.
Investigation Continues
Reform UK has confirmed that Gibbins remains suspended while the party investigates the allegations.
The outcome of the investigation could influence broader perceptions of how the party handles internal discipline and responds to accusations involving racism or discrimination.
The controversy also highlights the growing political pressure facing Reform UK as it transitions from a protest movement into a party holding significant elected power at local government level.
