The UK is set to provide Ukraine with enriched uranium to support the operation of its nuclear power facilities, while also preparing a fresh package of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain would increase its support for Ukraine as the country continues to face challenges caused by the ongoing conflict with Russia.
According to the UK government, the planned uranium deliveries are expected to provide enough fuel for Ukraine’s nuclear power generation needs for up to two years, helping to strengthen the country’s energy security ahead of future winters.
Starmer said the UK will “step up” its support measures to help Ukraine through the colder months, as concerns remain over potential attacks on critical energy infrastructure.
Alongside the uranium supplies, Britain is preparing additional sanctions aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to fund its war effort. The measures are expected to target vessels linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which has been used to bypass international restrictions on oil exports.
The new sanctions could also focus on ships involved in transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), increasing pressure on Moscow’s energy revenues.
