Labour MP Mike Amesbury has had his party whip removed after CCTV footage allegedly showed him punching a male constituent and continuing to strike him as he lay on the ground.
Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, was seen allegedly assaulting the man, who was later reprimanded while lying in the street before a bystander intervened, according to exclusive footage obtained by MailOnline.
Witnesses can be heard shouting “stop it” as it was revealed Amesbury has been voluntarily questioned by police under caution. The events leading up to the incident are unclear.
Cheshire Police confirmed, “A 55-year-old man has been interviewed under caution in connection with this incident and has been released while further investigations continue.”
The Labour Party stated that Amesbury’s membership has been temporarily suspended as the investigation proceeds.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson remarked that the altercation is now a police matter, while Amesbury has pledged full cooperation.
Police responded to the reported assault in Frodsham at 2:48 a.m., where inquiries are still ongoing. Asked about the Labour Party’s involvement, Phillipson noted that Amesbury has approached the police to support their investigation, and the Labour Party is allowing the police to handle the matter.
In a social media video, Amesbury appears to gesture at the man on the ground, reportedly saying, “You won’t ever threaten me again, will you?” while others shout at him off-camera.
